Most people get particularly nervous and shy in the limelight, before addressing large groups of people. After all, there are so many things that can go wrong, right? Your slides may not display properly. Your mic may not work. You may trip and fall on stage. You may say something incredibly stupid and be judged by the audience. All of the above.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These things happen even to the best of us, and we are here with a bunch of (semi)useful tips on handling these embarrassing situations with grace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Messed up slides&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This has happened to me so many times that I don\u2019t even consider it an issue but if you don\u2019t have a lot of public speaking experience, you\u2019re likely to worry about this. You know what? The audience is not there to witness your brilliant slide design skills. They\u2019re here to hear what you have to say &#8211; and to meet you. So don\u2019t sweat it! Tell people that your slides look much better on your computer, so they know you didn\u2019t half-ass the task, and you\u2019ll be good to go. Works like a charm every time!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mic not working<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On rare occasions, the microphone assigned to you won\u2019t work. This is usually fixed within minutes by the sound person on stage so it\u2019s really not that dramatic &#8211; but if you feel awkward just standing there, use your time for some classy pantomime or just make funny faces to the audience. Laughter is infectious, and people tend to like anyone who makes them laugh!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tripping on stage&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This one is tricky. Again, it has happened to me more than once &#8211; I have the grace of a drunken hippo, and stages have cables. Do the math. If you happen to trip and\/or fall on stage, don\u2019t just freeze in horror. Instead, use your&nbsp;not-so-delicate plunge to initiate interpretative dance. There are no rules when it comes to interpretative dance so everything goes, just keep it short. Then bow to the audience and move on to your presentation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Saying something stupid<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the last WordCamp I spoke, I tried to make a joke: I told the audience that I deny liability for anyone who dies out of boredom during my talk. Only instead of this, I told people I won\u2019t be liable for anyone who dies due to death. People laughed. I made another joke about death being the most common reason for dying. We all moved on. Because you know what? We all say stupid things, especially when we\u2019re under pressure. I would be incredibly surprised if anyone jumped from their seat in the audience and requested a harsh punishment for you messing up. It\u2019s just bad manners so people don\u2019t usually do that &#8211; and the shame fades away quite quickly.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These solid guidelines should prepare you for speaking in front of a smaller\/larger crowd.
